Tech Tips and Music Ideas for Creatives: July 2008

He Syncs, He Scores

I work in the UK. Every time I want to synchronize music with video I have to pay the prices set by MCPS. I have a project where the client can't afford those rates, so we need an alternative. Can you help? - Morty, London

Here in the US, we're way too busy Beckham-watching to worry about Standardizing prices for every bloke (or bird) that wants to synchronize music to video, Morty. Even ASCAP, who standardizes the rates for public performances (not to be confused with synchronization) of musical works in the US, freely allow their copyright holders (that's us) to negotiate rates directly with music clients (that's you).

Our $699.95 annual royalty free music subscriptions feature 10,000 tracks of outstanding non-MCPS music that you can synchronize to your heart's content. Knock yourself out, mate.

Frequency Fight Club

I need an upbeat music track that won't fight my VO. The male voice-over talent was awesome, but his voice takes up a massive frequency range. - Phil, NY

We totally relate. Hand to God, I once worked with a relative of Isaac Hayes with who voice was so low you could actually hear the squeak of his adenoids rubbing together if you listened carefully to the speakers. Ew.

The sheer genius behind the CDs in our Blue Fuse Undertones & Drum n Bass sub-series is that these high-energy tracks shy away from musical instruments that dominate the 1kHz-2kHz frequency range (to which our ears are most sensitive). This leaves plenty of sonic room for your VO and still provides musical "sizzle" in the outer frequency ranges.

To hear what we think is the absolutely perfect soundtrack for a big voice, check out the jazziness of "Fiddlesticks" on the Blue Fuse CD Nuthin' but Upright.

New in My liquidlibrary
View the ImageQuik Tips: Quik Tip 1 shows how to add detail by using Unsharp Mask in Photoshop, while Quik Tip 2 demonstrates how to use the Blend tool to make a circular frame in Illustrator.

How Tos: How To 1 provides a way to create a classic rust effect using Photoshop. And How To 2 continues in the same theme by showing how to create an ungroomed or scruffy border around an image.

Final Trick focuses on fairy tale color palettes that have a very 'young at heart' feel—almost childlike and quite playful. The current Focus provides examples of two identity makeovers, covering the redesigns of a farming magazine and an events complex.

The Ideas area has again been updated with real-world examples of liquidlibrary content in action, with 43 new ones to provide inspiration. We'll end with the U Design area, which showcases member design projects entered in the liquidlibrary Annual Design Competition.

New on Graphics.com/Learning

We're proud to announce that Steven Brower, acclaimed designer and professor at School of Visual Arts in NYC, has joined the faculty at Graphics.com/Learning. One of his video tutorials, The Human Touch: How to Not Work on the Computer, is available now; another, Creating the Unexpected, is coming soon.
