Tech Tips and Music Ideas for Creatives: September 2008

Commercial Conqueror

I'm trying to inspire my client with online examples of super-cool TV advertising. Any suggesttions? - Earl, AZ

Here's a great one, Earl: http://www.aicpshow.com.

In 1972, a group of independent commercial production companies formed AICP to standardize industry practices and began exhibiting their very best work every year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Our favorite spot from the 2008 exhibit is the Xbox 360 spot featuring Chopin's "Raindrop Prelude" as a soundtrack (see Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial category). That beautiful piece of music is available for licensing right here in our enormous library for just $59.95.

Stylin' and Profilin'

Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" works perfect for my tribute video, but I can't afford the rights. Do you guys have sound-a-like? - Dan, IL

Agents are watching, Dan. We prefer the term "Style-A-Like". "Sound-a-Likes" can land clients in hot water. Just ask Ford's ad agency from the 80's. Even after Bette Midler declined the chance to sing in their TV spot, the agency forged ahead with the creative concept and hired Bette's backup singer to mimic her vocal style. That infringement of intellectual property cost the agency $400,000 in damages. Ouch.

"Style-A-Likes" are better because we dissect the reference track at a more atomic level to understand what really makes the track work emotionally. In the case of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing", we think it's the angst-driven electric guitar arpeggios throughout. It just so happens our latest album of public domain music contains a terrific version of 'Amazing Grace' featuring a guitar work that delivers the same kind of bluesy emotion. Problem solved!

Taking your digital camera to a group party may not sound either creative or unusual, but consider a recent group bowling party where our production lead's score far outdistanced any score she'd gotten bowling with her significant other. She kept mumbling, "He'll never believe this." So, we used our digital camera to take frequent pictures of Mary and the overhead scoreboard. He believes it now.
